Dr. Marsha Nunley is a Texas native who moved to California in 2000. She earned her medical degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. She currently practices Functional Medicine, an integrative approach that seeks to discover and treat the underlying causes of illness and disease. This approach is particularly effective with chronic problems, as it is designed to work with the body's natural processes to heal and restore good health. Dr. Nunley is also an expert in menopause, andropause and bio-identical hormone therapies. She has completed specialty training in Geriatric Medicine, Palliative Care, and Pain Management, and is also certified in the new area of Aging Medicine through the American Academy of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. She has completed an Associate Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, where she explored the benefits of mind-body medicine, chiropractics, acupuncture, homeopathy, craniosacral therapy, hypnotherapy, and energy healing.
Dr. Nunley was drawn to Functional Medicine because it moves beyond the conventional approach of disease-based treatment. Several years ago, she dealt with her own chronic health issues that neither she nor her doctor seemed to be able to fix.
She wanted to be cured; she wanted to feel healthy and vibrant again. In her search for treatment, and for answers, she learned that physicians like her—who are trained in the traditional model of Western medicine—are unaware of many effective tools available for healing. Conventional medicine focuses on diagnosing disease and prescribing drugs and/or surgery to treat that disease. This approach fosters a "science of disease" rather than a "science of health". It ignores the basic biochemistry and innate wisdom of the human body. Medications are sometimes necessary, but they can also contribute to, prolong, or even cause disease. Dr. Nunley's own healing involved revamping her diet, removing toxins, adding missing nutrients, and balancing her hormones. Over time she was able to discontinue medication. Those lifestyle changes, along with regular exercise and the exploration of a spiritual connection, have led to profound lasting healing.
Dr. Nunley offers years of clinical experience as an internist and integrative medicine physician in San Francisco and Oakland. Her practice experience, her personal journey, and her knowledge of new functional medicine strategies in nutrition, aging, bio-identical hormone therapies, and lifestyle interventions offers you a unique opportunity to restore and revitalize your health.
